The Secret Society of Happy People

on August 1, 2012

Did you know that August is HAPPINESS HAPPENS MONTH, as declared by the Secret Society of Happy People? I didn’t even know there WAS such a secret club! But it turns out that in 1998, founder Pamela Gail Johnson started the SOHP with the following purpose in mind:

▪ Recognize your happy moments with the same enthusiasm as you recognize your unhappy moments.

▪ Encourage others to talk about their happy moments too.

▪ Don’t unnecessarily rain on other people’s parades.

After a little research online, I discovered that the Society has thousands of members from around the world. Originally, August 8th was declared Admit You’re Happy Day, but has since evolved to be a month-long celebration of spreading happiness in a not-so-secret way.

Check out the website, it’s pretty cool  www.sohp.com

When I first heard about this Society, I wondered why they would want to keep happiness a secret. But I know the reason, and I’m sure you do too… It’s because of the Eeyores! You know the Eeyores…the down in the dumps skeptics who think it’s ridiculous to try to be happy all the time. The ones who rain on your parade, poop on your lawn, whatever… The one’s who are “just being realistic.” You know who I’m talking about.

I, for one, would definitely rather be a member of the Secret Society of Happy People (although I don’t think I’m quite so ‘secret’ about it) than the Eeyore Poopy Club (should I trademark that?). How about you? How will you celebrate Happiness Happens Month?

Hmm, I wonder if they have a secret handshake…
